Ranch

I stood in this house for an hour and a half on a Thursday afternoon and all I could hear was a couple of birds chirping. Through the bay windows I saw a few hummingbirds flittering around, chasing each other through the cactus gardens. Knowing there was a nearby swimming pool, next to several bocce courts, tennis and pickleball courts and a putting green, I pictured most of the activity was probably happening inside that clubhouse, where residents gather to play cards in the game room, work up a sweat in the fitness center, or shoot around in the billiards room. The house had the faint scent of newness, probably from the fresh coat of soft white on the walls. The stainless steel appliances invited a meal to be prepared, the coolness of the clean fridge was refreshing on this particularly hot day. I imagined who used to occupy the space: a couple who enjoyed the home for many years, inviting their adult children and siblings by for a glass of sun tea on the extended covered porch before sunset. The car gently parked in the cool garage, awaiting the morning commute to the clubhouse less than a mile away. Solar panels quietly generating energy to keep the lights on at a fraction of the cost. Peeks of mountains and sunset skies adorned the street as I left, the shade of the olive tree in the front yard protecting the succulent garden beneath it.
